Lalique Rare Vase Appears With A Good R.Lalique Signature: The Lalique Vase Agadir! Ring any bells? It’s Lalique Vase model number 12.245. It appears in the catalogue right after the Lalique Vase Everest, which of course is number 12.244, and right before the Lalique Vase Vincennes, number 12.246. But the catalogue is not the Catalogue Raisonne. It’s a 1950’s Lalique Cristal-Paris catalogue. But here it is, in the flesh (a LOT of flesh we might add), with what by all appearances is a good R.Lalique signature. And this sure seems like the sister vase to the Cristal Lalique Vase Paimpol (shown in the last photo below), which is model number 12.240, and which appears in the book Lalique Glass, by Nicholas Dawes on Page 105! As you have likely surmised, this excellent book, among it’s other virtues, is the favorite Lalique book of Mr. Dawes! Mr. Dawes states in the book that the Paimpol vase had a wheelcut R.Lalique signature. And we have word coming out of a meeting of Oracles held to discuss this very subject, that one of the Oracles that participated in the meeting confirmed beyond doubt the authenticity of the R.Lalique signature on the Paimpol Vase!
So, read from the Ebay Listing – Item Number 310131680828 on the Agadir: “This old signed R. LALIQUE FRANCE vase is 10¾” (27 cm) high and weight app. 27 pounds!!!! The diameter is 11 5/8″ at its widest point and the top diameter is 8¼” large.”
Do you have any R Lalique vases that weigh in at one pound per centimeter? This vase doesn’t really seem to fit nicely into the Archers, Perruches, Serpent, Alicante style, that’s for sure, but other late vases also don’t fit very well either. Of course this one seems particularly ill fitting! What else? It’s heavy like crystal and seems a lot more Mark than Rene in overall style and design.
Hmmmm. All things considered, when the fog of history, the fog of war, and possibly the fog of adult beverages prevent total illumination, it’s best to go back to basic precepts, one of which is: With R Lalique, the signature cannot authenticate the piece! This is true even when the signature is “authentic”! So unless documentation appears in the future showing otherwise, what we have is a post war Cristal Lalique Vase made after the death of Rene Lalique, with an R.Lalique signature applied at the factory.
And for those of you who were wondering this whole time what the name Agadir means, it’s the name of a good sized Atlantic port city in Morocco. The city was made famous in 1911 by the Agadir Crises, in which France, Germany, and England all played a part, and which lead to France establishing a protectorate over Morocco.
Now, the most important question: Who among you has a glass shelf that can hold this monster vase?
Rene Lalique Car Mascot Leads Solid Lalique Auction Results: At the March 26, 2009 Sale of 20th Century Decorative Art and Design held at the Rockefeller Center Sales Rooms of Christies New York, the three Rene Lalique items offered did quite well. Top Lalique lot was the great Rene Lalique Car Mascot Tete De Paon in turquois glass, making a premium inclusive $40,000 US Dollars, outpacing the pre-sale estimate of $20,000 to $30,000. The 1914 presentation glass and metal Lalique Chalice Ville De Paris sold for a premium inclusive total of $15,000 against an $8000 to $10,000 estimate, and the rare R Lalique Glass Veilleuse Electric Perfume Burner Raisins, sold for $7500 all in, against a $5000 to $7000 estimate. Another solid performance for R Lalique at Christies, and another in a string of solid worldwide results for high quality R Lalique at auction.
The Rene Lalique Cire Perdue Vase “Orsades de Dranches Avec Graines”, which appeared at Drouot Estimations early this week in Paris, sold for a premium inclusive 69,400 Euros or approximately $97,000 US Dollars at todays rates. The roughly 8 inch RLalique Cire Perdue Vase, made in 1922, had not previously been photographed. It appeared in the Catalogue Raisonne only as a drawing: CP 479. The vase was signed R.Lalique and inscribed 414··22 for the mold number (414) and the year (22).
Rene Lalique Bowl Gui Not Shown In the RLalique Catalogue Raisonne Appears: At on online auction which ended this week, a rare R Lalique Opalescent Gui Bowl, in the Coupe Ouverte version appeared. There is a record of this bowl having been made, but it has not been documented with a photograph in the Catalogue Raisonne due to it’s rarity. On page 766 of the 2004 Catalogue Raisonne, there is blank spot for this bowl, with no photo of course, as item number 3322. Obviously with the well documented nature of the works of Rene Lalique, it’s pretty rare to have an item appear that is not shown in the Catalogue Raisonne, so we thought we’d point this bowl out to you, and provide a couple of photos of the bowl. A nice example of the work of Rene Lalique in a form not often seen. Overall, a pleasant shaped bowl with good opalescence. And for a bit over $800, seems like a great buy for a rare product of the great Lalique. And at least for now 🙂 the new owner can point to owning a piece “that is so rare it’s not even shown in the Catalogue Raisonne!” That surely is not something most collectors can say.
Rene Lalique Museum Exhibition Video Tour: Here is a great Rene Lalique Exhibition Video Tour in French, of the works of the great Rene Lalique from Luxe TV. The video documents the fabulous L’Exposition Lalique held in 2007 in Paris at the Musee du Luxembourg and in Berlin at the Brohan Museum in late 2007 and early 2008. The Lalique Exhibition, titled Rene Lalique Exceptional Jewellery 1890-1912 contained not just great and unique Lalique jewelry, but also some unique and other early glass works and objects including a couple amazing unique Rene Lalique Vases. The total number of Rene Lalique objects in the Exhbition was over 300. The video features Olivier Mauny, who at the time was the President Director General of The Lalique Crystal Company, and Yvonne Brunhammer, author and editor of several books and catalogs on the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods including several on Rene Lalique. She is the editor of the Official Exhibition Catalogue Book: Rene Lalique Exceptional Jewellery 1890-1912, which is a profusely illustrated oversized reference book concerning the Lalique Exhibition, as well as a substantial commentary and history about Rene Lalique and his works. There are several versions of this book with different amounts of content. It was announced today that the great Frenchman Rene Lalique has been found by researchers to be the actual inventor of the Satellite Dish! Exhaustive research has uncovered the fact that Arthur C. Clarke, who until today was generally credited with being the inventor of the Satellite Dish, received the photographed object as a gift from Rene Lalique, and that the ideas for his seminal article titled “Extra-terrestrial Relays”, which appeared in the October 1945 edition of the British magazine Wireless World, were all inspired by the design and ideas embodied in this Rene Lalique object. Scientific researchers and the entire scientific community today stand in awe of the great Rene Lalique, who until this discovery, was thought to be only the inventor of modern jewelry, the man responsible for the modern perfume bottle industry, the greatest glassmaker in the history of the world, a world class creator of art objects, and an inventor of industrial techniques of historical proportions. Jaws are dropping from Cambridge Massachussets to Cambridge England as the true genius of the great Lalique has been revealed. Amazingly, Rene Lalique had such forsight, that he invented the Satellite Dish before there were even satellites! An R Lalique Ask Yourself This: What do some recently appearing clear and frosted Gros Scarabees Beetle Vases and Ebeneezer Scrooge have in common? Nothing jumps to mind? 🙂 Here’s what you do to find out. Check out this photo of a fake Rene Lalique Gros Scarabees Vase! Don’t spend too much time identifying the various smaller differences between it and the documented Gros Scarabees like the one shown in the Catalogue Raisonne, or the great Cased Green Gros Scarabees Vase in the Lalique For Sale Section here at RLalique.com, or the one shown in the R Lalique 1932 Catalogue. Just focus in on the bottom row of beetles. Is that beetle in the middle doing a “stand up” comedy routine? Documented Gros Scarabees Vases don’t have a beetle standing straight up in the bottom row. Don’t walk, run, from a comic wannabee beetle. We’ve taken to calling these the “Dangerfield Beetle Vases”! So many puns on so many levels. Who can “stand” this stuff? And as always with supposed R Lalique items that may not be what they are represented to be; don’t waste a lot of time questioning the motives of the seller, if they know, if they care, whatever. The only thing that’s important is to be educated and know what you are buying. Or more importantly, to know what not to buy. We’ve seen these vases in Africa, in Europe and in the United States. They are very high quality, so be aware! One last observation: It seems that whoever made this mold wasn’t trying to pass anything off as R Lalique at the time. They were just nearly copying a great design. No different in concept really than the Consolidated Perruches Vase for example, a near copy of a great design that was not made to be sold as R Lalique. It appears likely that the maker of the mold for these vases purposefully didn’t make an exact copy, because from the quality, it seems they almost certainly could have closed the last few gaps if that was their original intention. It’s the addition of the R Lalique signature that starts these vases down the path of the dark side! Oh…… Scrooge and a Beetle? – Bah HumBug! And as the late and great Paul Harvey said from time to time; Now you know the rest of the story!

A nice looking R Lalique Sauterelles Vase has appeared on ebay, $30 and no reserve! An alert reader of this Blog wrote us to point out that this listing contains photos which have appeared previously on Ebay in another Sauterelles listing which was sold months ago. In addition, there was a more recent listing of a Sauterelles vase in January with an apparently identical sticker on the bottom to the previously sold one and to the current listing. That would be apparently the same exact sticker, not a similar one. As our alert reader points out, that would be three times for the sticker! The link to Ebay Item Number 250381642106 no longer works since Ebay has removed the listing. However, the photo in this post showing the sticker on the bottom is the photo from that listing. Lalique Victoire Seal on Ebay: A nice little R Lalique Victoire Seal (cachet) by Rene Lalique circa 1920 has appeared on Ebay with only a $40 starting price and no reserve. This small (4 cm) rare seal is not offered at auction too often. The seller has great detailed photos, reasonable shipping charges, and states ” very nice condition”. Signed LALIQUE, there is also an apparent period engraving on the underside. The Ebay Item Number is 400034024506. This is both one of the smallest and one of the rarest of the fabulous seal designs by Rene Lalique. Many owners don’t realize the age of the seal due to the great LALIQUE signature not containing the typical “R” in front. A tiny but wonderful piece of Lalique history, appearing as so often happens, out of the heartland of America with a low starting price and no reserve on Ebay. The Luxury of Rene Lalique: Unique Drawings and Objects: 1900-1930, is the title of a wonderful selling exhibition of the works of the great Rene Lalique being held at San Francisco’s world renowned Montgomery Gallery to coincide with the major exhibition of the works of Lalique, Faberge and Tiffany at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum (see previous post for details). The exhibition represents the largest assemblage of original Rene Lalique drawings ever shown together in the United States. In addition, there are wonderful glass objects including an Amber Suzanne Statue, and both Suzanne and Thais Statues in opalescent glass. The Montgomery Gallery has a great international reputation and is an extremely high quality place to showcase Lalique’s works. It adds yet another reason to visit San Francisco this Spring (so says the Oracle)!
Lalique Exhibition in San Francisco: The fabulous Exhibition “Artistic Luxury: Fabergé, Tiffany, Lalique”, which was at the Cleveland Museum of Art for many months, opened on February 7th at the San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Musuem. Lalique Museum Groundbreaking Ceremony: On November 8th, 2008, the unveiling of the cornerstone for the new Musee Lalique occurred at Wingen-su-Moder in the north of Alsace near the site of one of the glass factories of the great Rene Lalique. Partners in the project, which is expected to open in 2010 include the town of Wingen-sur-Moder, the Lalique Crystal Company, the Department of Bas-Rhin, and the Alsace Region. The museum will have official Museum status with the French government. This status will enable the Lalique Museum to accept deposits or loans of works from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée d’Orsay. The Museum will also have the right of preemption to acquire works in France, and it will be eligible for funding of acquisitions through a government fund for acquisitions by official Museums. This tribute to Rene Lalique, and what in effect will be a French National repository for his works for public display, has been a long time coming, and will provide a focal point not just in France, but also worldwide, for honoring the man who was not just the father of modern jewelry, but was also so important to the artistic and industrial development, implementation and adoption of decorative design in the first half of the 20th century with his fabulous glass creations. The museum will feature not just an exhibition hall, but also a garden and cafeteria, as well as an auditorium, a gift shop, and a teaching center. There will also be a place in the Museum for the works of Marc Lalique, as well space for temporary exhibitions. The Museum will apparently receive a good size group of around 200 items and 2000 original Rene Lalique drawings from the Lalique Crystal Company for exhibit, as well as items from the personal collection of Silvio Denz, the head of the Perfume and Fragrance Company, which owns just over 50% of the Lalique Crystal Company.

The famous and unique Rene Lalique Tresor de la Mer Opalescent Perfume Oyster, of which only 100 were made in 1936 by Lalique for Saks, appeared on Ebay this past week and sold for just over $21,000 in spite of various damages. This model Lalique perfume bottle and oyster are the highest selling R Lalique Perfume ever at auction, having made a premium inclusive $216,000 at Rago Arts and Auction Center in New Jersey in November of 2006 when a basically original and complete example appeared in its original box with original tags. The retail price in 1936 was $50! A pearl of a price. The Ebay Item Number is 130285472525.
